Christopher Columbus – The World is Round

Columbus-circle-300x288Christopher Columbus, an Italian, was convinced that the world is round, against the common thinking of the times. He originally went to King John II of Portugal and asked for several ships capable of withstanding such a trip as he believed by sailing west he would reach Asia. He calculated that Japan lay only 3,500 miles to the west across the Atlantic. Discovering North America was a mistake, it was never in the plan.

King John refused his request, so Columbus went to the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. They agreed to fund him, in return for Columbus agreeing to claim any new lands that he discovered for the Spanish Empire.

The result, an Italian claimed the New World for Spain!
