He did have a son, Henry Fitzroy, from one of his affairs, but therefore no male heir. Henry VIII was desperate to have a legitimate son, so he got rid of Catherine of Aragon and married Anne Boleyn. Anne Boleyn had a daughter, Elizabeth Tudor, but no son, so she was discarded, in fact beheaded. Eventually wife number 3, Jane Seymour, produced him a son, Edward, who eventually became King Edward VI.
